Portable TFT Display - A Technology Behind All Latest Display Devices


Gone are those days, where CRT monitors were used for televisions and PC monitors, now most of us prefer using LCD monitors. Flat-panel displays are the devices used in monitors, cell phones and laptops. FPD also support all the portable TFT displays like personal digital assistants. Hand held computers, the Display booths, portable displays screens held on the buildings all use TFT technology.

It overcomes the disadvantages of CRT monitors. The vertical length between the screen and the emitter gun is completely reduced by using this technology. The CRT display monitors are bulky and are not suitable for portable use. This primarily led to the invention of TFT technology and Flat-panel displays. The current portable TFT displays are of three types, they all are available at different price ranges. The most widely used type is the TN or Twisted Nematic type. This type is mainly used in 17'' display panels like the LCD monitors. The pixel density is very high and has a fast response time. The only disadvantage of this technology is the viewing angle which is confined to 130 to 140 only. Viewing through other angles results in color shifts and they mainly use 18-bit color.

 

The next step in the development of the portable TFT displays, are the introduction of the MVA panels. These portable display panels' exhibits 24 bit color and can display up to 16.7 million colors. The only disadvantages of these panels are that they have high response time and they are a bit costly. The viewing angles have improved a lot and these panels are ideal for LCD monitors and televisions. The most expensive panels in TFT are the IPS panels, these panels very wide viewing angles the blacking of the screen is reduced to the maximum extent. The resolution of the screen is the best when compared with other types. But as these panels are every expensive very few use these panels.

In general, a portable TFT display has a layer which comprises of thin transparent transistors, which exhibit light when they are excited. And in Liquid Crystal Display technology liquid crystals are placed on the thin film which changes orientation, when an electric field in applied on them. This led to decrease in the size of the picture tube and consequently the size of the display devices as been reduced. All the latest thin and slim electronic displays like PDA, Digital organizers and Digital Booths all use this technology. Only disadvantages of these TFT displays is that they offer low viewing angles and the cost of these displays are a bit high.

The resolution and the number of colors that can be displayed are very high. Black and White displays devices also use this technology and the pixel density of those screens is very less. Portable TFT displays have changed the way we watch movies and the way be work. As the prices of all electronic goods are becoming cheaper, these TFT displays will be available for every one.
